Week 02 Assignments

DM1111 Color Theory : Assignment #1 - [Part 1]
“9-STEP GREY VALUE CHART”
The Value Chart is made up of 9 different values of grey. You will paint a series of swatches from white to black. The tonal difference between the steps should be of equal percentage.

Each swatch should be of 1” x 1” [inch].
Lay them down from white at the top to Black at the bottom.
It is very important to mount these swatches carefully. Neatly cut and stuck on the page.

Submission
Submission Date: Week 3 [30th Apr – 5th May] – In Class

Each assignment should be submitted in a clear plastic sheet, with the grading sheet attached to the back.

Please fill in all the necessary fields in the grading sheet. Eg. Name, Admin no. Date, Assignment name etc.

1) Weekly Inspiring Image Collection & Expression:

Week 2: Self Expression Profile 2 – ‘The Creature’


a) Objective: Seeing Things w/ an Inspiring Focus

You need to collect (& paste) at least 5 pages of inspiring images of the above profile for your Idea Book.

Use found (internet & used magazines) & self taken images (photos) as your inspiring images. Note: be very sure that not only should they fit your * interpretation of this profile; THEY MUST also BE INSPIRING TO YOU!!

*interpretation: You need to define the Self Expression Profile of ‘The Creature’ w/ your own interpretation, or just use mine, ie ‘FORM that is given New & Higher Life’. Then you need to search (& paste) images by using that ‘attitude of seeing’.

You can have expansion of ‘other images’ included, but you must write down their definitions’.

b) Objective: Expressing Inspiring Subjects

Also, use 1 or more pages to interpret & express any inspiring topic(s) presented in the week 2 lecture:

1) World Vision about the 2 types of humans,
2) The Creators,
3) Self Expression Profile 2 – ‘The Creature’
4) & any other direct / indirect topics from this lecture

During the lecture, you can take down side-notes using writings & drawings of topics that inspires you. You can & should use your own interpretation to express these topics. There is no real right or wrong, but only whether it’s appropriate.

You can use your found / recorded images to present, explain, define, redefine, express… these topics. Depends on what you do in your Idea Book, your is graded on your
1) focus level during the lecture,
2) association ability as you collect images,
3) manipulation ability when you change parts to express,
4) inspiration & motivation level for how much you have expanded your expression,
5) creative imagination power as you interpret…..

(pls organise your Idea Book by marking / tagging your pages by week 1, week 2…& so on )

2) Weekly Inspiring Image Archiving

Create a file (S. E. Profile 1 – The Born Alive Self) in your computer to collect / save at least 10 inspiring images that expresses your Born Alive Self (Images can be the same as those being used in your Idea Book). This, together w/ other inspiring images of other weekly S. E. Profiles, will need to be submitted in a CD at the end of the module.

Please do this every week as this is a weekly routine for all students of this module.

DM1113 Design Fundamental
Week o2 Homework

Objectives : To be more sensitive with the quality of lines
and thickness.

Deadline : Week 02 class (coming Thursday or Friday)

Do a series of line exercise using your technical pens (0.1mm, 0.3mm,
0.5mm and 0.8mm), A4 layout pad and section pad(try out), as shown in the
lecture.

Techniques to be done are:-
1.Stippling,
2.Hatching,
3.Cross-hatching,
4.Wavy lines,
5.Zigzag lines, and
6.another 3 freestyle lines (of your own)

Every technique used must have at least 3 densities and drawn in a
(2cm width x 6cm height) area.

Each of these techniques must be shown in all 4 different thickness of
the technical pens.

All drawings should be done on layout pad, in portrait format.

Week 02 Collage Advertisement

In this assignment, you are required to create an advertisement using the collage technique.

Objectives
To translate an idea into visual form, an advertisement. Consider how you can convey your message in this advertisement and how to attract consumer’s attention .

Considerations
1) What is your product? (e.g. Nike )
2) What is the slogan? (e.g. Just Do It)
3) Who is your target audience?
4) What is your selling point/ theme/ message?

Deliverables - One
3 thumbnail sketches

􀂃 Sketch out 3 different thumbnails to illustrate the product you are advertising. Keeping in mind your target audience and the selling point of your product. It should include your product name and roduct slogan.

(Your idea must be approved before proceeding to work on your collage.)

Express creatively to produce at least 10 interesting iconic images that says the above statement. The chosen icon will be the new screen saver to replace the old one.

Visit Clockwork Exhibition at Singapore Esplanade, 7 Apr 2007 – 1 Jul 2007Superstring - a series of single continuous line drawings.

Create a box with various line thickness (e.g. thick to thin) and qualities (e.g. light to dark). The line should be continuous and does not intersect. Give the illusion of three planes: top and side.
